The Ghana Chamber of Mines has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic deaths of Ghana’s Ministers of Defence and Environment, along with six others, in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The Chamber described the incident as “a significant loss to Ghana.”

The Z9 military helicopter, en route from Accra to Obuasi for an event focused on illegal mining, crashed in a dense forest on Wednesday. All eight onboard perished — three crew members and five passengers. Their bodies have been recovered and transported to Accra, draped in Ghanaian flags, with a solemn reception held at the Air Force Base. Burial plans for the Muslim victims have been delayed pending full identification.

The deceased include: Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna – Former Minister for Agriculture and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chair of the NDC, Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East.

Others are Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo.

In a statement, the Chamber extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Government, and the entire nation, saying:

“Each of them was a dedicated public servant who made invaluable contributions to national development, paying the ultimate price in the line of duty.”

The Chamber highlighted its close collaboration with the Ministers for Defence and Environment in addressing illegal mining challenges. Their unwavering commitment, it said, was instrumental in protecting mining concessions, securing water bodies, and ensuring the safety of mining operations.

“Their leadership was central to our multi-stakeholder approach to combating illegal mining. Their absence will be deeply felt across all institutions championing sustainable and responsible mining in Ghana,” the statement added.

The Chamber pledged to uphold the legacy of the fallen by continuing efforts to protect the environment and secure mining communities.

“May the ultimate sacrifice of these eight gallant Ghanaians mark a turning point in the fight against illegal and irresponsible mining. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”
