MTN Ghana CEO takes over from Telecel Ghana CEO as Telecoms Chamber Chairperson
The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has announced a significant leadership transition following its 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held earlier this month. Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Governing Council for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, succeeding Patricia Obo- Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who has transitioned to the role of Vice-Chairperson.
The appointment underscores a pivotal moment for the telecommunications industry, which
faces mounting challenges including theft of active infrastructure, vandalism at cell sites,
destruction of fibre optic cables, high taxation, increased fees and charges, and cybersecurity
threats. In his acceptance address, Mr. Blewett expressed gratitude to Madame Obo-Nai for her outstanding leadership and emphasized the need for unified action. “The telecommunications sector is the backbone of Ghana’s digital economy, but the challenges we face demand collective ingenuity and partnership. We must bind together to surmount these obstacles and ensure sustained growth,” he stated.
During his one-year tenure, Mr. Blewett will lead advocacy efforts in collaboration with the
Chamber’s CEO on critical policy matters, strengthen industry-government relations, and
champion innovations that drive digital inclusion among others. His responsibilities will
include chairing bi-monthly Governing Council meetings, overseeing strategic initiatives, and
representing the Chamber on national and international platforms. With extensive experience at MTN Ghana, Mr. Blewett is well-positioned to drive initiatives that address infrastructure vulnerabilities and bolster overall economic development driven by the telecommunication industry.
Madame Patricia Obo-Nai, now Vice-Chairperson, reflected on the resilience shown over recent challenging years. “It’s been a difficult time due to several challenges, but we’ve stood strong.
The times ahead require us to work collectively, and I’m confident Stephen’s vision will guide
us forward,” she remarked. The AGM also saw the adoption of the Chamber’s 2024 Financial
Statement and authorization for the Governing Council to determine auditor remuneration.
The Governing Council, comprising heads of member organizations in the Chamber and the
CEO, continues to serve as the Chamber’s board of directors, meeting bi-monthly to advance
the industry’s interests. This leadership transition heralds a new era of collaboration and
innovation to navigate the evolving telecommunications landscape in Ghana.
