Nation mourns loss of eight prominent Ghanaians in tragic helicopter crash

A military helicopter carrying eight people, including two government ministers and top military officers, crashed in the Adansi area of Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Wednesday morning, killing everyone on board.

The Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter departed Accra at 0912 hours en route to Obuasi but lost radar contact shortly after takeoff.

The victims were identified as Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Amaning Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

According to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the government declared three days of national mourning starting Thursday, August 7, 2025, as a mark of respect for the victims.

All national flags will fly at half-mast across the country until further notice.

President John Dramani Mahama expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, led a delegation to inform the families of the victims, while the Chief of Staff and NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, led another team to offer condolences to the family of Dr. Omane Boamah.
