The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Twifo Atti-Mokwa, Isaac Yawson, has pledged to complete an 18-year-old abandoned school project and 48 lockable stores under the government’s Legacy Projects initiative by the end of the year. He believes these developments will give the district a major facelift and boost economic activity.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of Parliament’s Local Government Committee hearing on the Auditor-General’s 2023 and 2024 reports, Mr. Yawson explained that the directive from the Ministry of Finance and the Presidency required assemblies to prioritize long-abandoned projects.

“In my district, we had projects abandoned for over 18 years, dating back to President Kufuor’s era. We have restarted one at A&D Basic School in Twifo Praso, and it is progressing steadily. The 48 lockable stores, which were abandoned three years ago, are now about 85% complete,” he said.

He further revealed that under the Legacy Projects, two schools—one at Twifo Aponapon and another at Opokukrom—have already been completed. Additional projects are being advertised in newspapers and will soon commence.

On funding, the DCE confirmed that the district had so far received ₵6 million, which has been allocated to ensure the completion of ongoing works.

By the close of the year, the 18-year-old abandoned project and the 48 lockable stores will be fully completed. We also have another project at Asenso Agave, currently at 85% completion, with contractors still on site. We are committed to delivering these projects on time,” he assured.

IGF Challenges and Appeal to Traders

Despite progress on the Legacy Projects, Mr. Yawson highlighted challenges with mobilizing Internally Generated Funds (IGF), especially from traders.

“Revenue collectors go round, but some traders complain that things are not going well and ask them to come back later. I want to encourage our people to cooperate with the assembly. Through IGF, we can undertake important development projects,” he urged.

He noted that the district had already used IGF to construct a culvert at Ashire Duko Duko-Subresu stretch, serving four to five communities.

Vision for Twifo Atti-Mokwa

Outlining his vision, Mr. Yawson said he is determined to see Twifo Praso and the entire district developed within his tenure. He cited the recent successful relocation of recalcitrant traders from roadside areas into the new market as an example of progress through dialogue and consultation.

When I assumed office, there were challenges with traders resisting relocation during the decongestion exercise. Through engagement, we were able to move them into the market. I am confident that in the next four years, Twifo Atti-Mokwa will see significant transformation,” he added.
