College of Community Health Nursing, Winneba, launches 50th anniversary celebration

The College of Community Health Nursing, Winneba, officially launched its 50th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, 6th November 2025, at the college auditorium. The golden jubilee marks five decades of commitment to excellence in nursing education, community health advancement, and professional development in Ghana and beyond. The launch, held under the theme “Emerging and Re-Emerging of Infectious Diseases: The Need for Specialised Training,” highlights the crucial role of community health nurses in addressing the evolving challenges of public health.

A host of notable dignitaries joined the celebration, among them Neenyi Ghartey VII, Oma Odefe of the Effutu Traditional Council, who served as the Special Guest; Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency; Rev. Atta Mensa, Municipal Chief Executive for the Effutu Municipal Assembly; and Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Minister for Health, who honoured the ceremony as the Special Guest of Honour.


In her address, Dr. Hannah Yawson, Principal of the College, expressed gratitude to stakeholders, alumni, and partners for their ongoing support. She reaffirmed the College’s mission to train nurses capable of meeting emerging health needs, stating, “For half a century, this College has trained compassionate professionals who carry knowledge in their minds and service in their hearts. Today, we honor our founders and mentors, celebrate our students and alumni, and renew our promise to protect the health of our communities.
The event was chaired by Neenyi Ghartey VII, Omanhene of the Effutu Traditional Area. In his remarks, he reminded attendees of the sacrifices made by past students and tutors in building the institution’s legacy and commended them for their tireless efforts and dedication to service.


Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Minister for Health, commended the College for its long-standing contribution to Ghana’s health sector and emphasized that community health nurses remain the first line of defense in healthcare delivery. She outlined government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen nursing education through specialized and adaptive training, investment in tutor development, and sustained financial support, including the payment of student allowances, to ensure the production of competent and resilient nurses.


The launch marks the beginning of a year-long series of commemorative activities designed to honor the College’s rich legacy, celebrate its achievements, and highlight the invaluable contributions of its graduates to Ghana’s healthcare system.


As part of the anniversary, the College announced a series of developmental projects aimed at improving teaching, learning, and accommodation facilities. These projects include the construction of a student hostel, an auditorium, and a perimeter fence wall to enhance safety and infrastructure within the College.


As the College of Community Health Nursing, Winneba celebrates this significant milestone, it reaffirms its unwavering commitment to training skilled, compassionate, and globally competitive health professionals who drive innovation and bolster the resilience of the nation’s health sector.
